In the oil and gas industry, lack of control over safety-critical equipment can have serious consequences. From unexpected downtime and increased costs to the risk of personal injury and regulatory violations. Multiple players, fragmented systems and manual processes that make it difficult to maintain an overview. SPAS has been developed to solve precisely these challenges, and is a user-friendly tool that gives you control, overview and security in demanding environments.
An application that minimizes risk and increases operational efficiency
SPAS is an application that specializes in monitoring the technical safety functions on an oil and gas production facility and makes it easy for operating companies to monitor and ensure intact function for equipment such as valves and safety barriers on oil and gas installations. The application detects degraded functions early, reduces risk and contributes to safer and more cost-effective operation. SPAS has value for personnel within several disciplines such as Technical Safety, Automation, Maintenance, Mechanical, etc., and is to be used both on offshore facilities, as well as by the operations organization on land.
SPAS also contains a separate RCA module that contributes to a good overview of ongoing and previously performed analyses and measures. This ensures history and an overview of progress.
Advanced safety analysis and operational efficiency
After several years of pilot projects and testing, we at Zeek Solutions AS received a framework contract with Aker BP, where we will implement SPAS for their offshore facilities. “From a SIS coordinator perspective, SPAS answers all the needs that Aker BP wants from such a type of application,” says Roger Gabrielsen, SIS Coordinator, Aker BP. He emphasizes that SPAS makes it easy to present data clearly and clearly, which makes it easier to make good decisions, faster.
The potential value of using SPAS in the years ahead is to use it as the primary workspace for monitoring the instrumented safety system. This requires seamless data flow, without data loss, between other applications to make contextualized information available with the right quality.
It is not only Aker BP that we work closely with, OKEA also has positive experience with our application. “We became interested in SPAS and found that this was a tool that would support us in having control over our instrumented safety functions,” says Anne Lene Rømuld, Lead Control & Automation Engineer, OKEA. As of today, Zeek Solutions AS has a framework agreement with OKEA for the Draugen platform, where several modules of SPAS have been in operational operation since January 1, 2023.
- AI is fully autonomous.” AI still requires human oversight, training, and ethical considerations.
- AI is one-size-fits-all.” Successful AI adoption depends on tailoring solutions to specific industries and problems.
Cut costs with automated follow-up
SPAS has proven to be an effective application in daily safety work. Anne Lene highlights that SPAS has given OKEA great insight into the reliability of the instrumented barriers. They also find that they can now spend less time on manual work, as SPAS provides automatic updates on the status of the various safety functions they have. This supports the regulations, ref. Management Regulations §5 Barriers: It must be known which barriers and barrier elements are out of function or weakened.
Roger Gabrielsen also agrees that the application saves both time and makes the work more efficient. He points out that the system makes it easier to detect deviations, both in design and performance, early in the process. This means that they can more quickly initiate measures to ensure that the safety system always functions as it should.
The future of SPAS
With SPAS, operating companies gain better control over technical safety, faster decision-making and less time spent on manual work. This provides safer operations and our customers with compliance with requirements – and more time to focus on what really matters.
We thank Aker BP and OKEA for the cooperation so far and look forward to continuing the SPAS journey in the coming years!
Aker BP
Aker BP is one of Europe’s largest independent oil and gas companies with operations on the Norwegian continental shelf. The company has approx. 3000 employees distributed across offshore installations and offices in Fornebu, Stavanger, Trondheim, Harstad, Sandnessjøen and Lysaker. Aker BP operates field centers such as Valhall, Ula, Edvard Grieg & Ivar Aasen, Alvheim and Skarv, and is a key player in the Johan Sverdrup partnership.
OKEA
OKEA is a Norwegian oil company that became operator of the Draugen platform in 2018. The company focuses on efficient operation of mature fields and uses SPAS to strengthen its maintenance and barrier management process. Several modules of SPAS have been in operation on Draugen since January 1, 2023.
